I'm making CalAction free to use

August 21, 2026

Since launching CalAction, I always struggled with the idea of the in-app purchase. I'm a firm believer in the idea that software should be free to use, and that people should be able to use all of it without any barriers. I also believe that people should get the opportunity to support the development of software they use and like, within their own means.

I no longer think the in-app purchase is the best model for me. A new version of CalAction is currently in review that removes that barrier to entry and makes the entire app and all its features free to use.

I've been playing with this idea in my head for a long time. It's been a struggle trying to figure out when to do this because I don't want to make it seem like I'm not grateful for all the sales I've had so far. I think a good way of looking at it is that the in-app purchase was in a way a donation with some added benefits. Now that the benefits will be free to use for everyone, that leaves just the donation. And I'm very grateful for every single person who found CalAction useful enough to buy the pro version.

I have no intention to set up my own business and all that entails, and asking money for my ever increasing catalogue of side-quests not only is burdensome, it doesn't feel like the right thing to do.

I created a projects page where you can see all my side-quests and there's a donation link for when you find any of the things listed useful. It is and will always be completely optional. A donation just acts as motivation for me to keep creating tools for iOS, infrastructure and the open web.

I'm already working on the next thing and I've got a whole backlog of ideas to work on later. Stay tuned. ✌️
